ACLU Thinks American Elections Should not be Restricted to American Voters

The House of Representatives has followed a growing trend in state legislatures to pass laws requiring voters to obtain – usually free – some form of photo ID to show before they cast their votes. Several states have passed such laws, plus a few local jurisdictions like Albuquerque, N.M. The House action would apply the same requirement in federal elections starting in 2010.

The bill has now gone to the Senate. President Bush has stated that he will sign it into law, when it comes to him.

The ACLU called this “undue and unnecessary burdens on Americans’ fundamental right to vote. H.R. 4844, the ‘Federal Election Integrity Act of 2006,’ requires voters to present a government- issued photo ID in order to vote in federal elections.” By 2010, this law would require proof of American citizenship for issuance of that ID.

The Director of the Washington Legislative Office of the ACLU was quoted on the ACLU website as saying, “No eligible citizen should have to pay to vote. There are voters who simply don’t have photo ID and requiring them to purchase one in order to vote would be tantamount to a poll tax. This measure will disproportionately impact racial and ethnic minority voters, senior citizens, voters with disabilities, and others who do not have photo identification nor the financial means to acquire it.”

This ignores the fact that most of these local, state and federal laws make it free for voters to obtain alternative photo ID to the drivers licenses which most adults carry. The alternative IDs (used by those who for medical or other reasons do not have drivers licenses) are normally and routinely used by people who seek to buy groceries, cash checks, apply for Social Security, and many other routine life activities.

While the ACLU claims that it is trying to preserve the right to vote of “millions of American citizens,” the truth is quite different. The ACLU is trying to preserve illegal votes – by real voters voting more than once, or by illegal aliens, or by “voters” seeking to vote under the names of dead people. The real purpose of the ACLU is to preserve these illegal votes, based on its assumption that these fraudulent votes will be cast predominately by people who agree with the politics of the ACLU.
