Each of the five passengers told investigators they had paid to be smuggled illegally into the United States and were picked up by Ramirez. A federal grand jury in the Western District of Missouri indicted three individuals in separate cases for illegally reentering the United States after prior deportations. The defendants include Erik Santana-Garcia, a Mexican national facing additional charges of transporting a minor for illegal sexual activity and possession of child pornography; Romeo Perez-Bravo, a Guatemalan national who had allegedly lived under a stolen U.S. citizen identity since 2009 and been removed three times; and Andres G. Angel-Martinez, 25, found in the U.S. after removal in 2019. The cases are part of the DOJ's Operation Take Back America initiative.

Illegal immigrant brothers arrested in Missouri in connection with deadly carjackings

Two brothers from Honduras, Adin Aman Cantarero Benitez, 26, and Jose Cantarero Benitez, 20, were arrested in Missouri in connection with a series of violent carjackings. Adin allegedly shot and killed Jesse Gilmore, 63, during a carjacking, after which the brothers disposed of Gilmore's body in a ditch along Interstate 44. The following day, Jose attempted another carjacking and shot a woman in the chest before being apprehended after a foot pursuit.

Two Mexican Nationals Charged in Conspiracy to Fraudulently Obtain Visas for Immigrant ‘Victims’ of Staged Crimes

Oscar Gutierrez, 35, of Independence, Missouri, and Jose Luis Morales Salgado, 36, of Kansas City, Missouri, both Mexican nationals, were charged in federal court for allegedly orchestrating a scheme in which immigrants paid to become staged "victims" of armed robberies in order to fraudulently apply for U-Visas. Salgado allegedly recruited individuals to pose as robbers and directed immigrant clients to the locations of planned staged crimes, with the affidavit citing 11 robberies involving 33 victims between December 2021 and July 2024 and potentially more than 100 total victims. The investigation was conducted by the Kansas City Police Department, ATF, and Homeland Security Investigations.

Boone County Sheriff does not foresee major changes to immigration enforcement

Boone County Sheriff Dwayne Carey said his department does not anticipate significantly altering its approach to immigration enforcement, noting that the county sees far fewer undocumented immigrant detainees than might be expected. In 2024, only 11 people were held on federal immigration charges at the county jail, with nine in custody at the time of the report. Carey indicated that standard criminal enforcement continues as usual, with immigration classification decisions left to state prosecutors and federal agencies.
