ACLU Continues to Fight Katrina Hurricane Cross Memorial

By |2023-05-20T09:38:25-04:00September 28th, 2006|

Los Angeles Times – 8/16/2006

The ACLU of Louisiana has stepped up its demands that the St. Bernard Parish not build a memorial to the victims of Hurricane Katrina which would feature as part of it, a cross.

The ACLU contends that the land upon which the memorial would be built is public – but it is not! They also contend that because local government officials were part of the committee that chose the location — and the location is near a public waterway, it would be unconstitutional for the memorial to be marked with a cross.

The memorial is scheduled to be erected […]

By |2023-05-20T09:38:25-04:00September 28th, 2006|

WPMI-TV, – 8/16/2006

Despite a Pace, Florida high school dress code that requires “students whose personal attire distracts other students shall make alterations before entering the classroom,” the ACLU is defending a boy who chooses to wear a dress to school. The dress code prohibits, among other things, girls showing their midriffs and boys wearing muscle-shirts. Loud hair colors are also not allowed.

ACLU regional director Susan Watson said, “The ACLU is speaking out on this issue to make sure that students have the right (to cross-dress)…”

ACLU Fights Los Angeles to Allow Homeless to “Camp” on Sidewalks

By |2023-05-20T09:38:25-04:00September 28th, 2006|

Los Angeles Times – 8/22/2006

Los Angeles has passed an ordinance which makes it illegal for anyone to “camp on public sidewalks.” The ACLU has filed suit against that ordinance, which has been held-up by federal court order in April, pending resolution of the suit.

The “campers” are mostly on Skid Row in Los Angeles. “Tents” have multiplied in the area, while arrests for crimes have decreased 23%. The L.A. Police Chief and the L.A. City Attorney have both said they will resist further compromises with the ACLU, which the court seems intent on forcing, through court-ordered meetings for further agreements.

KATC-TV, New Orleans – 8/24/2006

The ACLU of Louisiana threatened to sue the City of New Orleans over a planned prayer service to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. As a result, the City promptly caved in to the demands of the ACLU.

The Executive Director of the ACLU of Louisiana threatened the lawsuit to halt the ecumenical prayer service unless the City renamed the service and invited Harry Greenberger of the “New Orleans Secular Humanist Association,” a so-called non-religious organization, to participate. To avoid the suit, the City invited Mr. Greenberger and renamed the prayer service as a “Remembrance, […]

By |2023-05-20T09:38:26-04:00September 28th, 2006|

WNBC-TV – 9/1/2006

Americans who do not have young children may not know this, but federal law now requires that parents obtain Social Security numbers for their school-aged children. Many New Jersey schools are asking students to provide their SS numbers when they enroll, to determine whether they are legal residents.

The ACLU of New Jersey has protested, saying, “This type of practice has a chilling effect on immigrant students, both documented and undocumented, who want to attend our public schools.” The ACLU has not explained how this affects documented students, who therefore could obtain SS numbers. Perhaps the ACLU is […]

ACLU Attacks Mickey Mouse?

WKMG-TV – 9/1/2006

For years, Walt Disney World in Florida has been reading the shape of visitors’ fingers on its property. Now the upgraded machines scan fingerprint information. The technology does not store the entire fingerprint image and scanned information is purged in 30 days.

“We are not collecting fingerprints,” a Disney representative said. “We are not collecting personal information…. The system takes an image, it identifies points on that image and measures the distance between those points and immediately creates a numerical value… [which is} … stored in our system and recalled when a guest reenters our turn-styles using their […]

By |2023-05-20T09:38:27-04:00September 28th, 2006|

St. Louis Post-Dispatch – 9/4/2006

One City (Albuquerque, NM) and several states have passed similar laws which require photo ID for voters in their jurisdictions. These laws vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. In some the photo IDs are mandatory (and free to the citizens). In others, they are one of several alternatives.

The ACLU of Kansas and Western Missouri and the ACLU of Eastern Missouri have filed suit against a new Missouri law that voters must present state-issued photo identification cards at the polls in order to be eligible to vote. The State’s purpose, as with the other states, is to […]
