Ken Blackwell and Bob Morrison:Obama's Supreme Court Choice: No Evangelicals Need Apply

ACRU Senior Fellow Ken Blackwell co-authored this column appearing on the American Thinker website on May 6, 2010.

When Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court last year, the media was full of stories of an historic first, a barrier broken. The first Latina to serve on the high court is certainly something to note.

Justice Clarence Thomas was only the second black American to be nominated to the Supreme Court. His confirmation hearings, however, were hardly the stuff of “let’s make history.”

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Joe Biden, after promising Judge Thomas a fair hearing, enabled the […]

Robert Knight: Economics: It's Greek to the Socialists

By |2010-05-06T19:30:19-04:00May 6th, 2010|

ACRU Senior Fellow Robert Knight wrote this column appearing on Townhall.com on May 6, 2010.

There they were, at the wall under the Parthenon on May 4, unfurling their giant banners urging “Peoples of Europe—Rise Up.” The banners were emblazoned with a red-colored communist hammer and sickle.

This was obviously not an appeal to the goddess Athena, for whom the temple was built from 447 to 432 BC. The location, however, was fitting, since they were standing beneath one of the most famous ruins in the world. After years of socialist policies, Greece is in economic ruins and is threatening to bring down the European […]

Peter Ferrara: Keep the Lights On

By |2010-05-06T12:53:19-04:00May 6th, 2010|

ACRU General Counsel Peter Ferrara wrote a column appearing on the American Spectator website on May 5, 2010.

The oil spill off the coast of Louisiana is an environmental tragedy that endangers the prosperity of coastal businesses that thrive on the natural environment, such as fishing and tourism. It is not a reason to permanently deny America the jobs and prosperity that come from a vibrant energy industry producing much needed, reliable, low cost energy from all sources. That would be a far bigger tragedy, even graver than the oil spill.

A robust, booming, American energy industry would itself contribute directly to a booming American […]

Ken Klukowski: Supreme Court Victory Narrowly Saves Cross from Destruction

By |2010-05-04T13:15:22-04:00May 4th, 2010|

ACRU Senior Legal Analyst Ken Klukowski wrote this column appearing on Townhall.com on May 3, 2010.

In a very narrow ruling, the World War I memorial shaped like a Latin cross will continue to stand in the Mojave desert. But this was not the victory that conservatives hoped for, and serves as a reminder that the current Supreme Court is a moderate one.

On Wednesday, April 28, the Supreme Court handed down its long-awaited decision in Salazar v. Buono concerning the Mojave cross. A white cross stands atop Sunrise Rock, erected by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) in 1934, with a plaque dedicating it […]

Peter Ferrara: The President's Permanent TARP Bailout Socialism Bill

By |2010-05-03T12:50:04-04:00May 3rd, 2010|

ACRU General Counsel Peter Ferrara wrote a column appearing on the American Spectator website on April 28, 2010.

The Tea Party, with overwhelming agreement from the American people, opposes any further TARP bank bailouts. But just as with the health care bill, Washington’s ruling Democrats are laughing off the Tea Party, and ignoring the American people.

President Obama’s so-called Financial Regulatory Reform bill institutionalizes permanent TARP bailout authority across the entire financial sector, indeed, for any company that can be deemed involved in financial activity of any sort. Washington is operating today as if we have been conquered by a foreign power that has suspended […]

Salazar v. Buono

By |2020-04-23T21:52:59-04:00April 28th, 2010|

The ACRU is happy to report that an important stride was taken today, April 28, 2010, in defense of the 1st Amendment, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in favor of protecting an historic veteran’s memorial cross in the Mojave Desert that had been challenged by the ACLU. The Veterans of Foreign Wars erected the memorial cross in the Mojave National Preserve in 1934. A former preserve employee and visitor, Frank Buono, claimed that the cross violated the First Amendment. Rather than remove the cross, Congress and the Interior Department transferred the land to the VFW. Buono, backed by the ACLU and the Ninth Circuit Court of […]

ACLU Makes False Attack on New Arizona Law

By |2010-04-27T17:34:41-04:00April 27th, 2010|

The ACLU is already cranking up to challenge the new Arizona law about illegal aliens in that state on the ground that it has “racial discrimination” and violates “civil rights” in the US. Reading the text of the law shows that it follows the most recent Supreme Court decisions on civil rights. A visit to the border shows that Mexicans are about 95% of the people entering Arizona illegally, so if the impact of the law is 95% on Mexicans, there is no discrimination.

Ken Blackwell: The VAT's in the Fire

By |2010-04-23T13:05:46-04:00April 23rd, 2010|

ACRU Senior Fellow Ken Blackwell wrote this column appearing on Townhall.com on April 23, 2010.

When President Obama was a candidate, he pledged over and over to voters: If you make less than $250,000 a year, your taxes will not go up. Voters read his lips. They hoped for change.

Yesterday, the President said that the Value Added Tax is “on the table.” That means it will be the main course served up after the November elections. After ramming through his ObamaCare bill on the narrowest of partisan margins last month, the President is finding that it’s going to be impossible to deliver on […]

Peter Ferrara: Take the Painkiller and Go Home

By |2023-03-10T08:04:52-05:00April 23rd, 2010|

ACRU General Counsel Peter Ferrara wrote a column appearing on the American Spectator website on April 21, 2010.

The defining moment for the Presidency of Barack Obama came early, in June, 2009. It was one of many health reform extravaganzas to come, this one televised by ABC from the East Room of the White House, a town hall among health care experts and consumers.

Citizen Jane Sturm took the mic to ask how the brave, new world of Obamacare would treat people like her 105-year-old mother. At age 99 her mother’s heart specialist confided that without a pacemaker he couldn’t keep her alive, but at […]

ACRU Urges NJ Supreme Court to Deny Sen. Menedez Petition to Hear Recall Appeal

By |2020-04-23T21:52:59-04:00April 21st, 2010|

Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) petitioned the New Jersey Supreme Court to hear his appeal from the ruling of a state appellate court that a citizens committee seeking a recall election to remove him from office could proceed to circulate petitions to collect the signatures required under the New Jersey Constitution to qualify for such an election.

The American Civil Rights Union (ACRU) filed an amicus curiae brief on April 21, 2010 with the New Jersey Supreme Court urging it to deny the petition from Senator Menendez to hear the case on the grounds that the circulation of petitions and the collection of signatures is political activity […]
