ACLU Labels Defending the US against Terrorists, as "Discrimination"

By |2009-03-04T18:42:13-05:00March 4th, 2009|

The ACLU has attacked an information-sharing center in Dallas for “discrimination” against Muslims for reporting facts about associations between Muslim terrorists abroad, and Muslim groups in the United States. If it prevailed, the ACLU position would cripple the effectiveness of these 58 Homeland Security centers around the country.

The facts for this article, but not its legal conclusions, come from an article in the Dallas Morning News on 26 February 2009. The ACLU was objecting to the contents of a memo, leaked from inside a “Fusion Center.”

To back up and explain: 58 Fusion Centers were set up around the country by the Homeland Security […]

Ricci v. DeStefano

By |2009-03-02T09:02:59-05:00March 2nd, 2009|

On February 26, the ACRU filed an amicus brief with the United States Supreme Court arguing that the Court should reverse the decisions below and hold that New Haven discriminated against Petitioners solely because of their race.

In 2003 the city of New Haven conducted a job-related, race-neutral promotion examination for firefighters, and then refused to promote the firefighters who ranked on top because they were all white or hispanic. The decision to not promote the firefighters was reached after an African-American political ally of the mayor threatened to sue under Title VII. The ACRU is arguing that the city of New Haven […]

ACLU Favors American Rights for Dangerous Foreigners

A US Immigration Judge in California has decided that “mistreatment” of a known illegal alien from Mexico justifies her ruling that the alien’s deportation order should be dismissed. The ACLU supports this conclusion, which could provide backdoor citizenship for thousands of illegal aliens.

The facts for this article, but not its legal conclusions, come from an article in the Los Angeles Daily News on 21 February, 2009. A US Immigration Judge in Los Angeles has just ruled that because the Immigration Service has “mistreated” an illegal alien after his arrest, she is justified in ruling that he cannot be deported.

Ken Blackwell: Equal Opportunities .. Not Outcomes

By |2009-02-20T19:17:46-05:00February 20th, 2009|

One of the most contentious social and political debates of our time pits the opposing goals of equality of opportunity versus equality of outcome.

Some would claim the point was settled before the Founding of the American republic in that the Declaration of Independence recognized as an unalienable right the “pursuit” of happiness rather than happiness itself. Others argue that various social and political disadvantages through history create the need for more balanced outcomes as recompense for past wrongs.

This discussion is no more heated than in the world of education. […]

Robert Knight: Listen Up, While You Still Can

Bill Clinton says America needs the Fairness Doctrine because conservative talk radio is sounding "a blatant drumbeat" against the stimulus package. He complained on a liberal talk show on Feb. 12 that "there has always been a lot of big money to support the right-wing talk shows."

Ken Blackwell: A Chicago-Style Census

By |2020-04-23T21:48:01-04:00February 17th, 2009|

The census is one of the most important functions performed by the federal government because the integrity our representative democracy depends on it. Because both parties understand its importance, the census has always been insulated from political corruption.

Hans Zeiger: Where are the Conservative Intellectuals?

I recently visited Ronald Reagan’s Rancho Del Cielo for the first time. Credit for the ranch’s preservation goes to the Young America’s Foundation. There are many beautiful things about the ranch, but the best is his bookshelf. Covering a wall in the living room, it is the first thing you see upon entering the little house. There are various books about the Southwest, horse guides and Western novels. Then there are the conservative books – the books by conservative thinkers of the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s. My guide pointed out Reagan’s well-thumbed copy of “Witness,” the […]

Walter Williams: The Hell With Our Constitution

Dr. Robert Higgs, senior fellow at the Oakland-based Independent Institute, penned an article in The Christian Science Monitor (2/9/2009) that suggests the most intelligent recommendation that I've read to fix our current economic mess. The title of his article gives his recommendation away: "Instead of stimulus, do nothing -- seriously."
