A federal jury convicted Felipe Orduna-Torres and Armando Gonzalez-Ortega for their roles in a June 2022 alien smuggling event in which approximately 66 migrants were loaded into a tractor-trailer lacking functioning air conditioning, resulting in the deaths of 53 people — including children — and injuries to 11 others. A third defendant, Rigoberto Ramon Miranda-Orozco, an alleged leader of a Guatemala-based smuggling organization who arranged the travel of migrants who perished in the trailer, was extradited from Guatemala to face charges in the United States.
