Alexis Saborit, a 42-year-old illegal immigrant from Cuba, was convicted in May 2023 of first-degree premeditated murder for the killing of his girlfriend, America Thayer, 55, whom he struck with a dumbbell and then decapitated with a machete in Shakopee, Minnesota, in front of witnesses. However, in July 2023, a judge ruled Saborit not guilty by reason of mental illness, finding that his mental illness prevented him from understanding that his actions were morally wrong. The case drew national attention in part because ICE had confirmed Saborit was in the country illegally.
