Human Smugglers Sentenced to Prison After Indian Family Froze to Death Near Border
February 24, 2026
Two men convicted in connection with a human smuggling operation were sentenced in Minnesota after a family of four from India — Jagdishkumar and Vaishaliben Patel and their children, ages 11 and 3 — froze to death near the Minnesota-Manitoba border in January 2022 during a blizzard with wind chills of -36 degrees Fahrenheit. Harshkumar Ramanlal Patel, 29, received a 10-year prison sentence, and Steve Shand, 50, received more than six and a half years.
