Boone County Sheriff does not foresee major changes to immigration enforcement

Boone County Sheriff Dwayne Carey said his department does not anticipate significantly altering its approach to immigration enforcement, noting that the county sees far fewer undocumented immigrant detainees than might be expected. In 2024, only 11 people were held on federal immigration charges at the county jail, with nine in custody at the time of the report. Carey indicated that standard criminal enforcement continues as usual, with immigration classification decisions left to state prosecutors and federal agencies.
