As a member of the Conservative Action Project, ACRU CEO Susan Carleson and leaders of 23 other organizations representing a broad cross section of the conservative movement are united in the belief that if there is a government shutdown, it will be the fault of Senate Democrats and President Obama.

MEMO FOR THE MOVEMENT: President Obama & Senate Democrats Have No Excuse for “Shutting Down” the Federal Government

“From a partisan point of view, I think it would be the best thing in the world to have a shutdown.” – Former Vermont Governor and DNC Chairman Howard Dean

RE: The Republican led House of Representatives passed a spending plan this past February for Fiscal Year 2011 with $61 billion in spending cuts–because last year the Democrats never passed a budget! The Democrat led Senate has failed to pass their own plan and President Obama has been largely silent. Now some are talking about a government shutdown–really a “slowdown” since vital services keep running– if an agreement to reduce government spending cannot be reached. In a time of fiscal crisis President Obama and Senate Democrats are refusing to do what every household in America is doing–control spending.

ISSUE-in-BRIEF: The Congress has now twice passed Continuing Resolutions (CR’s) because they could not agree to pass a spending plan. Gross federal debt has reached $14 trillion and ongoing deficit spending is projected at $1.4 trillion for 2011. If a “shutdown” occurs it will be because the Democrats won’t agree to cut a mere 2% from the current budget. A government “Shutdown” can be avoided if:

1. If President Obama and Senator Reid get serious about cutting government spending and reducing the size of the federal government.

2. If Congress and the President agree to cut spending by just less then 2% ($61 billion out of $3.8 trillion); and

The Republican led House of Representatives have done their job by passing HR 1 that cut $61 billion from President Obama’s proposed budget. The lack of leadership from President Obama and Senator Reid has produced the situation we are now facing. The real issue is not CR’s or government “shutdowns;” the real issue continues to be the size and scope of the federal government and the amount of taxes imposed on the American people. The President should take a break from his “basketball brackets” and figure out how to come up with 2% of spending reductions from his colossal budget.
